Modern Life Wasn’t Designed for Our Bodies, why Massage is more than just a "treat".

Let’s be honest — when was the last time you booked a massage without justifying it first? We seem to have found ourselves in a culture where by we feel we have to earn our rest, when in fact rest is an essential part of keeping healthy.

And by rest I don't mean doom scrolling on social media, I mean good, calm, grounding rest:

Forrest Bathing (For-Rest!)

Reading / Journaling

Switching Off Technology

Walking in Nature

Aromatherapy Epsom Baths

Yoga / Stetching

and of course, nurturing your self care with Massage.

As a Massage Therapist (and a busy mum and business owner!) I rarely go more than 6 weeks without one, the difference in how I feel is significant. It's like plugging in my nervous system to be recharged.

I don't tell myself lies about how I need to exhaust myself first to have a calm nervous system.

Let's face it, modern day life is not built to nourish our nervous system.

“I’ve had a stressful week.”“My shoulders are so tight.”“I’ll treat myself once life calms down.”

The problem is, life rarely slows down. And your nervous system wasn’t designed for the relentless pace of modern living: desk jobs, school runs, endless notifications, doom-scrolling, and the constant pressure to ‘keep going’.

Massage is not an occasional indulgence. It’s a vital tool for nervous system health — and the research backs it.

Let’s break down why.

The Nervous System Strain You Can’t See

Your nervous system controls everything from your heartbeat to your digestion, mood, sleep, and immune response. And when it’s under chronic stress (hello work pressure, family demands, financial worries, and screen overload), it stays stuck in sympathetic dominance — better known as ‘fight or flight’ mode.

That constant state of high alert can trigger:

Tight, aching muscles

Tension headaches

Poor sleep

Anxiety

Digestive issues

Low mood

Fatigue

Sound familiar?

The Science Bit...What Massage Actually Does to Your Nervous System (According to Research)

Massage therapy is one of the few natural interventions proven to calm the autonomic nervous system — shifting you out of stress mode and into your body’s healing state.

A 2020 meta-analysis in Complementary Therapies in Medicine found that massage therapy significantly reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), lowers blood pressure, and slows heart rate — clear signs of nervous system regulation.

Another study in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry showed that just 30 minutes of massage twice a week reduced anxiety symptoms by up to 50% in individuals with generalised anxiety disorder.

That’s not pampering. That’s medicine.

Regular Massage: It’s About Maintenance, Not Rescue

Many people treat massage like a crisis fix — waiting until the pain is unbearable or stress is through the roof. But the real power of massage comes from regular, preventative care. Why? Because your nervous system needs consistent reminders of what ‘calm’ feels like.

One-off treatments might offer temporary relief, but regular sessions create a cumulative effect:

✨ Improved sleep quality✨ Reduced anxiety and mood swings✨ Decreased muscle tension and headaches✨ Boosted immune function✨ Better digestion✨ A stronger, calmer baseline in daily life

Think of it like brushing your teeth. You don’t skip it for 6 months and then book a dental deep clean when it hurts. Massage works the same.

But Isn’t It a Luxury I Can’t Afford Right Now?

I hear this a lot, especially with the cost of living where it is. But if your body is holding tension, stress, anxiety, and overwhelm every single day — what’s the real cost of not dealing with it?

Regular massage reduces your need for reactive treatments like painkillers, physio, or stress-related GP appointments. It improves productivity, sleep, energy, and mood — which affects your relationships, work, and overall health.

And I always remind my clients: your health isn’t an optional extra. It’s the foundation everything else depends on.

Had my second pregnancy massage yesterday at 35 weeks and it was just as good as the first one at 29 weeks. I wish I had started earlier in my pregnancy! The whole experience was amazing from the foot soak at the start of the massage. The foot and scalp massages shouldn't be missed!
