When most people book a massage, their priority is usually their back, shoulders or legs — and understandably so. Those areas take the brunt of everyday life, from desk jobs to endless to-do lists.

But if you’re ignoring your neck and scalp, you’re missing out on one of the most effective ways to relieve stress, tension headaches, poor sleep, and overwhelm.

Here’s why…

Your Neck & Scalp: The Unsung Heroes of Stress Relief

Your scalp alone contains over 20 muscles — many of which we subconsciously tense when stressed. Combined with your neck, which holds significant nerve pathways and blood vessels, this area is directly connected to your brain and nervous system.

When these areas hold tension, you might experience:

  • Tension headaches or migraines

  • Poor sleep quality

  • Neck and jaw stiffness

  • Anxiety and irritability

Research from the International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork found that targeted scalp and neck massage has a measurable impact on reducing stress hormones like cortisol while increasing feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine.

Another study published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science concluded that scalp massage improves parasympathetic nervous system activity (the ‘rest and digest’ part of your system), leading to lower heart rates and calmer minds.

Why It Feels So Good (And Why It Matters)

We instinctively touch our heads or necks when we’re overwhelmed. Ever noticed yourself rubbing your temples or holding your head after a long day? That’s your body’s way of trying to self-soothe.

A professional massage in these areas doesn’t just feel relaxing — it actually triggers your nervous system to switch from a stressed, fight-or-flight state into deep relaxation mode.

This can:✔️ Reduce muscle tightness✔️ Ease headaches and migraines✔️ Improve sleep quality✔️ Boost mood and reduce anxiety✔️ Enhance mental clarity

Had my second pregnancy massage yesterday at 35 weeks and it was just as good as the first one at 29 weeks. I wish I had started earlier in my pregnancy! The whole experience was amazing from the foot soak at the start of the massage. The foot and scalp massages shouldn't be missed!
