Why Your Neck Pain and Headaches Keep Coming Back (And What Your Body Is Actually Trying to Tell You)

Deep Tissue Massage for Neck Pain & Headaches in Norwich, Horsford & Taverham

Let’s talk about that neck pain.

The one that creeps in by mid-afternoon - or worse - you wake up with. The one you try to stretch out, rub away, ignore…

Until it turns into a headache.

This isn’t random

Most of the people I see don’t come in saying:“I’ve got a serious issue”

They say things like:

  • “My neck’s been a bit tight”

  • “I keep getting headaches”

  • “I've been under stress or working too much...”

And they’re right - but not in the way they think.

This is what’s actually going on

Your neck isn’t working in isolation.

It’s connected to:

  • Your shoulders

  • Your upper back

  • Your scalp

  • Your jaw

  • Your nervous system

So when you’re:

  • On your phone

  • At a laptop

  • Driving

  • Carrying kids / bags

  • Mentally “on” all day

Your body responds by subtly bracing.

Shoulders lift.Neck tightens.Jaw clenches.

And it becomes your normal.

Then the headaches start

Not out of nowhere.

But from:

👉 Tension building through the neck and shoulders

👉 Reduced movement and circulation

👉 Muscles staying contracted for too long

This is what’s often called a tension-type headache - and it’s one of the most common types.

Research shows these are strongly linked to muscle tightness and stress, particularly in the neck and upper back.

Massage has been shown to help by:

  • Reducing muscle tension

  • Improving blood flow

  • Supporting relaxation of the nervous system

Why “quick fixes” don’t last

Stretching helps - briefly. Pain relief dulls it - temporarily.

But neither actually releases the deeper holding pattern.

So it comes back.

Again and again.

This is where deep tissue massage comes in

Not as a “treat”…but as a way to actually deal with what’s causing it.

When I’m working with neck pain and headaches, I’m not just focusing on one spot.

👉 Upper back (where a lot of tension starts)

👉 Shoulders (often holding more than you realise)

👉 Neck (where it shows up)

👉 Scalp (where tension often finishes)

Because it’s all connected.

What I usually recommend

For this kind of tension, I don’t just do a quick neck massage.

I recommend:

Back, neck, shoulders + scalp work

So we can:

  • Release the source of the tension

  • Not just chase the symptoms

  • Give your body space to actually reset

What clients notice (that they didn’t expect)

It’s not just:“My neck feels better”

It’s:

  • Fewer headaches

  • Feeling lighter through the shoulders

  • Better sleep

  • That sense of calm you didn’t realise you were missing

Because we’re not just treating muscles - we’re calming the whole system.

The part I’ll say honestly

If your neck pain and headaches keep coming back…

It’s not something your body is going to just “fix” on its own.

It’s a pattern.

And it needs to be released - properly.

This is where it becomes an investment

Not in a massage.

In:

  • How you feel day to day

  • Your energy

  • Your patience

  • Your ability to actually switch off

Because when your body feels better, everything else is easier.

If this sounds like you…

If you’re:

  • Constantly rubbing your neck

  • Getting regular headaches

  • Feeling tight through your shoulders

  • Struggling to fully relax

This is exactly what I work with.

This is based on what I see every day in clinic, but it’s not medical advice. If your pain is severe, persistent, or you’re unsure what’s causing it, it’s always best to get checked by your GP before booking.

Had my second pregnancy massage yesterday at 35 weeks and it was just as good as the first one at 29 weeks. I wish I had started earlier in my pregnancy! The whole experience was amazing from the foot soak at the start of the massage. The foot and scalp massages shouldn't be missed!
